Michelle Diaz reads from a Spanish-language copy of "The Very Busy Spider" at Eisenhower International School in Tulsa on Tuesday. The immersion school is preparing to move to a larger site.
With your eyes closed, you'd think you were in Mexico.
That was my first impression at Tulsa's Eisenhower International School, where kids read, write, talk and count in Spanish. It's part of an immersion program that offers foreign language lessons at a very young age. There's no denying its effectiveness.
A group of kindergardeners read "The Very Busy Spider," a childhood favorite of mine. The twist is that the book was in Spanish -- "La Araña Muy Ocupada."
I can barely spell "araña," much less use it in a sentence. But the youngsters followed right along. It was amazing.
The program's entering its 30th year and has steadily increased in popularity. Administrators are relocating this summer to allow for an expansion.
You can read more about Eisenhower in Thursday's Tulsa World.
