Usually this time of year my Saturdays are spent photographing college football. This last Saturday, I didn't have a football game to photograph. It was a typical newspaper photographer Saturday. Four assignments, all before 1 o'clock. It wasn't until later I realized that while I had no football game to shoot, I still shot a full day of sports. All amateur, some for a good cause and others just for fun these competitors were a good diversion from the typical college football Saturday.

As with the more traditional sporting events, sometimes the photos away from the competition are my favorites.
