So, it’s with a cringe I read the latest
Associated Press story about women crediting the popular erotic bondage novel “Fifty Shades of Grey” as the reason for their pregnancies.
The love story between Christian Grey, the billionaire sexual dominant, and shy yet strong Anatasia Steele has sold more than 31 million copies.
I’ve read the steamy trilogy.
It’s OK for the romance genre but could have been better with an editor and thesaurus. It’s not the healthiest relationship, but there is a happily ever after.
The books arrived with a built-in base from a “Twilight” fan site, where author E.L. James began writing the hot-and-heavy romance.
And it’s become a force that has been parodied and celebrated.
The online community of mothers at BabyCenter.com shows nearly 150 women crediting the book for their pending newborns.
Mothers say the book gave them ideas for the bedroom or served as “inspiration.”
Too Much Information.
Another show of its pop culture influence is the announcement by an English hotel that it is
replacing the Gideon Bibles in the rooms with a copy of the first book.
Also, a Portland, Ore., hotel featured in the novels offers a “Fifty Shades” package, and two Seattle hotels (where the book is set) give options for book-inspired perks.
It’s all kind of silly in the end.
Hopefully, the mothers will have enough sense not to name the newborns Ana, Christian or Grey.
That would just be too obvious and mean to the kids.
My favorite summation of the novel comes from the You Tube divas, 3 Golden Sisters. These Italian sisters in their 80s meet once a week and film short segments of themselves discussing various pop culture topics.
