5 fun and free things to do with your family this weekend

You're not going to run out of things to do this weekend. It will be easy to keep yourself, and the kids, busy with happenings ...

Can't get enough Woody Guthrie? Check out one of these events.

A friend told me he had thought more about Woody Guthrie in the last few days than he had his whole life.

It's no wonder. ...

Going out to eat with toddlers is a practice in the definition of insanity. Nearly every time my husband and I take our kids out, we tell ourselves we'll never do it again. Then a few days pass, and we either don't feel like cooking or haven't been to the grocery store, and we find ourselves back at a restaurant.

It's getting better though, and we've learned we can go somewhere besides Incredible Pizza and actually have a good time. A few tips: Bring a bag of Cheerios and pocket games to keep them busy. Skip any restaurant that has a long wait. Even the most patient kids could meltdown before dinner. And, go early to beat the crowds and to curb cries of "I'm starving."

Here are five of my favorite places to take kids.

1. Hideaway. My kids love the kites, the colorful collages and the coloring sheets. Hideaway is great about giving each kid a piece of dough, too.
Several locations across Tulsa.

2. Andolini's. Yes, another pizza place. I've found that pizza places are the most forgiving restaurants because they're generally already noisy, pizza is liked by nearly all kids and, perhaps most important, kids can play with the dough while you wait for your food. At Andolini's, most tables have a good view of the pizza making, so let the kids watch as the cooks toss the dough and sprinkle the cheese.

3. Ollie's. The kids will love the mashed potatoes and gravy, chicken and apple pie, but for kids Ollie's is really about one thing: Trains. Trains chug overhead on the tracks that run all across the restaurant. It will keep kids entertained long after the waitress takes your menus.
4070 Southwest Blvd., 918-446-0524

4. Brewburger. The owners of Brewburger understand kids. Their young daughter is often at the restaurant, hanging out with her mom and dad or eating a burger. Moms and dads will love that they can actually carry on a conversation while their kids play with the big baskets of toys, coloring books and playing cards near the entrance.
6577 E. 71st St., 918-591-2818

5. Cosmo Cafe. Cosmo has one of the best kids' menus in town. My kids love the little yogurt parfaits with sprinkles. Kids and parents will also like the hummus, grilled sandwiches and salads.
