While I do these reports weekly with the release of the U.S. Drought Monitor map, here's a reminder for those just tuning ...
A scene from the Oklahoma-filmed movie 'Twister' to lead-in to this topic:
When the movie's character who doesn't ...
It's not a Tulsa urban legend, myth or a running joke: It really does rain every year (since 2008) at downtown's Mayfest.
And ...

Look at that giant snowfall near downtown Tulsa! No, actually that's idle salt going unused due to lack of snowfall, taken March 13. JAMES GIBBARD/Tulsa World File

Also not snow: A warehouse full of salt sits idle at the city yard on March 13. JAMES GIBBARD/Tulsa World File

In honor of our (up to) 0.5 of an inch of snow forecast for late Saturday/early Sunday, I present to you: 10 Tulsa snow facts.
Information is from the National Weather Service:
1. Tulsa has not received any snow in March 2013 (as of March 22).
Normal snowfall for March is 2.1 inches.
2. Tulsa received 3.7 inches in February 2013.
Normal February snowfall is 1.8 inches.
3. Tulsa had trace amounts of snow in March and December 2012, and January 2013.
Normally, Tulsa has 2.3 inches in December and 2.1 inches in January.
4. Tulsa's highest March snowfall ever was 19.7 inches in 1924.
Still dwarfed by February 2011's 22.5 inches, the snowiest month in Tulsa's recorded history.
5. Tulsa's earliest measurable seasonal snowfall was 0.3 inches in October 1993.
Tulsa has only recorded snow five times in October, and the other four were only trace amounts.
6. Tulsa latest measurable snowfall happened twice in April.
April 1957 had 1.7 inches, while April 1973 had 0.3 inches.
7. Tulsa has had three years with no recorded snowfall: 1900, 1901 and 1903.
Tulsa also has never recorded any snowfall in the months of May, June, July, August and September.
8. Tulsa recorded 1.7 inches in 2012.
This ranked it as the 14-least snowiest season in records dating back to 1900.
9. 2009, 2010 and 2011 each had more than 10 inches recorded.
19.4 inches in 2009, 15.4 in 2010 and 26.1 in 2011.
10. Tulsa's annual average snowfall in 9.6 inches.
So unless we get about another 6 inches, we'll have another below average year, like 2012 (1.7 inches).
