10 facts on 2012 Bartlesville weather

Visual proof that I have not neglected Bartlesville's weather! This is the front page of the Tulsa World's Feb. 11, 2011 edition.

I sometimes get reader comments requesting more weather information on areas outside of Tulsa. Two of those readers happen to be my parents, who live in Barltesville.

Fortunately for them and other Bartlesville residents, the National Weather Service actually does have more detailed weather information on Bartlesville in its preliminary monthly climate data.

Thus, I give you: 10 facts on 2012 Bartlesville weather, courtesy of the weather service:

1. Bartlesville has reached hotter temperatures than Tulsa this year (as of today).

Tulsa's calendar year high remains 107 degrees, set on July 19. But on that same day, the weather service recorded a high temperature of 108 for Bartlesville.

2. 15 times (as of July 23), Bartlesville has reached the 100s.

Bartlesville, like Tulsa, is currently on a seven-day 100s streak.

3. Bartlesville wants rain.

My parents often bemoan how these occasional storms are missing Bartlesville even as they hit Tulsa and it turns out that the weather service agrees with them. Only 0.19 of an inch so far in July (as of July 23). Tulsa is also lacking rain, but we have 1.32 inches so far.

4. Bartlesville hasn't always wanted rain.

While it started the year off with a measily 0.15 of an inch in January, it had a few very rainy months since: 6.06 inches in March and 7.36 inches in April. Those two months alone almost equal Tulsa's January-June rainfall (14.6 inches)

5. No snow in Bartlesville?

If you check the weather service stats page, you may occasionally see an "M" in some categories. It stands for "missing," as in, the information is missing for that day/hour/etc. So, while no snow recorded in the month of February, several days have missing stats. I'll try to find out the missing info for a later entry.

6. Single digit temps happened twice

It's not exactly last year's front page headline Brrrrtlesville, but it has been colder than many areas (Tulsa included) have experienced. 9-degree lows happened on both Jan. 18 and Feb. 12.

7. Every month had above-normal average temperatures.

June was the closest to normal, only 0.6 degrees above. However, March was the biggest culprit: It's 59.1 degree average is 10.3 degrees above normal for Bartlesville!

8. Very rainy days.

There was 3.01 inches on March 19. There was 2.92 inches on June 4. However, most areas should be jealous of Bartlesville's consistent 1 inch-plus days in the month of April: 1.71 inches on April 7; 1.92 inches on April 14; 1.3 inches on April 29; and 1.74 on April 30.

9. Very rainless streaks.

Bartlesville went 12 days without recording any rainfall in January. And then 14 days from the end of March through the beginning of April. Then 15 days in May.

10. Relief might be around the corner.

Cheer up, Bartlesville. You might have more 100s forescast for the coming week, but you also have a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms forecast for Thursday, the same day that highs are forecast to dip into the 90s.
