3-D now at two Tulsa theaters

This just in: Tulsa now has a second 3-D movie screen, with the Cinemark Tulsa joining the growing trend last weekend.
The multiplex at 71st Street and U.S. 169 added the 3-D capability to its biggest theater, No. 17 with 441 seats, just in time for "My Bloody Valentine 3-D" to open last Friday.
Cinemark Tulsa's senior assistant manager Claudia Douglas confirmed that the horror film made a killing and sold out most of the shows during the weekend.
That makes sense, as box-office reports indicate that the film made $24.2 million over the four-day holiday weekend, with about 80 percent made at the 3-D screens across the country.
That would be more than $19 million at the 1,000 3-D screens nationwide, and maybe $5 million at the 1,500-plus 2-D screens that showed "My Bloody Valentine 3-D."
And that tells you why Hollywood studios are excited about the old technology that's now the new-and-improved technology future for many movies.
The AMC Southroads 20 is still screening movies in 3-D in its theater No. 1, the only other Tulsa moviehouse with this capability, but that will certainly change considering the number of films planned in that format, especially by Disney.

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.
