Looking for something to do tonight?
There was a time, not so long ago, that going downtown on a weeknight was an all around bust. Restaurants closed early, the streets were empty. Not anymore. Downtown is happening every day of the week.
It's especially true this holiday season, with loads of things to do within a few square miles.
Here are five things to do downtown Wednesday night.
1. Go shopping. The pop-up shops, in the Thompson and Philcade buildings near Boston Avenue and Fifth Street, will only be here through the holiday. You'll find everything from home decor to food and books. On Wednesdays, the shops stay open until 8 p.m. Also look for Christmas cheer from carolers and St. Nick himself.
2. Have a burger. The Wednesday night burger deal at McNellie's is so inexpensive, it's possible to get out of there for less than you would pay for fast food. And, in case you've never been to this downtown pub, trust us, the burgers are great. From 5 to 11 p.m. Wednesdays, plain burgers are $3 and cheeseburgers are $4. A side of sweet potato fries is a must. McNellie's is at 409 E. First St.
3. Watch "A Christmas Carol." Dickens' story of Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim and Bob Cratchit is played with such talent and spirit in the American Theatre Company production at the PAC. Several showtimes remain in the days leading up to Christmas, including 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
4. Skate for half price. Bring a blanket, coat, scarf or gloves and get half price skate rentals at Winterfest, outside the BOK Center. If ice skating isn't your thing, grab a cup of hot chocolate, and have fun people watching, whether you're walking around or perched high in a carriage ride.
5. End with dessert. Dessert at the Brady Tavern is a thing of beauty. Desserts, made in-house by pastry chef David Robuck, aren't afterthoughts. Two favorites: the flourless chocolate torte and a candied pumpkin tart. Both are sweet interpretations of the winter season, and for about $7, well worth it. The Brady Tavern is at the corner of Main Street and Brady Avenue.
