Take a cooking class at Sage Culinary Studio.

Winter break is here, and that means downtime for the kids. Make it a fun and memorable break from school. Here's where to start:

1. Go to a museum. Want to get your teenager talking? Take him or her with you to the Gilcrease or Philbrook museums. Take your time looking at the art, and then treat your kid to lunch at either of the museums’ restaurants.

2. Breathe some fresh air. If you're feeling cooped up, head to the Oxley Nature Center's Winter Solstice celebration for kids. Kids can make ornaments out of natural materials, wrapping paper using leaf rubbings and treats for the Oxley wildlife. Oxley will also have hot chocolate and cider. It's from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Oxley, 6700 Mohawk Blvd. Bring a donation of canned food for this free event.

3. Get cooking. If you have a kid who likes to play in the kitchen, check out Sage Culinary's cooking day camps. The half-day camps are perfect for kids new to Sage. Half-day sessions are from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 27. Cost is $50. It's not until next week, but go ahead and register now if you're interested. tulsaworld.com/sageculinarystudio

4. Run wild. If you have little ones taking a break from pre-K or daycare, let them run off some energy at Bikes and Balls, one of Tulsa's biggest play dates. Bikes and Balls is from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Whiteside Park Community Center, 4009 S. Pittsburg Ave. It's for kids up to age 5. Cost is 50 cents per child.

5. Read to a dog. If you have kids ages 7 to 12, this is a fun experience they won't forget. Registered therapy dogs will be at the Collinsville Library for PAWS for Reading, where kids are invited to read their favorite books to the dogs. Each child will receive a free book from the Tulsa Library Trust. It takes place from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Collinsville Library.

I've read about the program "Read to a Dog". Great idea and the kids love it. Don't remember what show I was watching. They interviewed a number of kids and they said they didn't worry about mistakes or being laughed at. They enjoyed reading for the first time. The adults involved in the program said they saw a drastic improvement in regards to kids reading skills.
