7 ways to celebrate the first week back to school

It's the end of the first week of school for most kids in Oklahoma.

Naturally, we celebrate the end of the school year with pizza parties, late-night movies and swimming, so why not celebrate the beginning of the school year?

Show your kids that school is deserving of a hip-hip-hooray with some back-to-school weekend fun.

Here are some ideas for things to do around town to kick off the end of the first week of school.

1. Throw some skee balls and eat until you burst at Incredible Pizza. Kids from preschool to high school can have fun here.
8314 E. 71st St.

2. Take a weekend cookie break at Great Harvest Bread Co. You probably know how good the bread is, but have you tried the cookies? Pick up some oatmeal-chocolate chip cookies for your kids, and feel OK about it since they're made with whole-wheat flour.
5203 S. Sheridan Road

3. Stroll the Cherry Street Farmers Market. If you've never taken the family to the famers market, give it a try. Listen to live music, check out the artisan food and show the kids how to pick out a watermelon.
15th Street and Peoria Avenue

4. Have a doughnut day. If oatmeal and cereal is your typical breakfast, break out of the routine. The OK Country Donut Shoppe has doughnuts in every letter and shape you can imagine.
8048 S. Yale Ave.

5. Take your teenagers to the Blue Rose. Show them that you can be cool, and take them here for a burger, a view of the Arkansas River and a chat about what their first week of school was like.
1924 Riverside Drive

6. Go shopping somewhere new. If your usual shopping trips are to the mall, try something different. Take the kids to Ida Red, and buy them some Toms shoes and nostalgic candy.
3336 S. Peoria Ave.

7. Walk the grounds of Philbrook. Little ones love strolling the paths, looking at the fish and standing in the gazebo. Explore the museum inside and out, then take a few minutes to ask them about their expectations for the school year ahead.
