A Boston weatherman's station loses power during a broadcast and Tulsa and Oklahoma drought update

We're not the only area getting hit by thunderstorms, as this "There's a lot of lightning in the Boston area" video shows:

As David Harper reported in today's edition, the Tulsa area and parts of northeast Oklahoma experienced another downburst last night. Please check out his article for more info and some amazing lightning photos from photojournalist Mike Simons.

World Capitol Bureau reporter Barbara Hoberock and I will have a drought article in this weekend's Tulsa World, but before then, please check out the current U.S. Drought Monitor map nationwide:

So, while our drought situation in Oklahoma is an improvement over 2011, the drought situation overall in the U.S. is much worse than in 2011.

First time hearing about the U.S. Drought Monitor? Here's some specifics:

Created in 1999 as a cooperation of local, state and federal authorities

Assesses the drought situation nationwide using a five-step scale, from D0 for abnormally dry through D4 for exceptional drought

Monitors drought factors including lake and pond levels, rainfall, crop reports, wildfires and fire danger, temperatures, soil moisture

Used to institute burn bans and agricultural relief programs

Updated weekly on Thursdays

And I should note that while it is updated weekly on Thursdays, information is finalized on Tuesdays.
