Just when you think it's time to give up on people in general, along comes a group like Great Decisions.

I had the pleasure of speaking with them Tuesday morning and although I expected the worst I came away with some new friends and a renewed faith in people.

We discussed House Bill 1804, the state's anti-illegal immigration law that I have opposed for so long. Everyone there didn't agree with me, but to a person they were respectful and willing to discuss our differences in a civil manner.

I was in a roomful of people who are probably smarter than I am (I know, that's a short putt). It was the kind of group that I love to be around. They are newspaper readers, which means most were over the age of 50 (maybe even 60). They stay up to date on current events and all have a definite opinion. And all were nice people.

Great Decisions is sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association, www.fpa.org, and its goal is to promote citizen education in world affairs. Tulsa had 12 groups organize last year in different parts of the city and the 2009 organizational meeting will be held Sunday (Jan. 25) at the Central Library downtown.

I am really glad I got to visit with these folks, although I did miss the inauguration ceremony. I read so many comments on the Tulsa World Web site that are negative and downright mean that I often begin to lose my faith in people. Great Decisions recharged my battery. I am really glad I made the trip. I also got to see the inside of the Hardesty Regional Library for the first time. It's impressive.

So, thanks to Gene Alvord and Stan Teter and all the members of Great Decisions for letting me come out and talk. And thanks for the kind reception. And thanks for restoring my faith in people.
