A LOOK back at Lavigne

Fans of Light Opera Oklahoma might remember Ken Lavigne, who performs with the company for two seasons (2001 and 2002).

He's getting some notoriety these days for answering the old question of "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?" by saying "First, raise about $200,000."

Lavigne's name rang a bell when we saw this story because the link we followed to find it was headlined "Canadian Tenor Raises Small Fortune, Rents Carnegie Hall."

During Lavigne's first season with LOOK, his nationality and voice type made for a punchline in the company's production of "The Mikado." Lavigne was playing Nanki-Poo, who in the course of the story was needing to be executed by the local Lord High Executioner Koko, played by the late Brett Aldridge.

However, Koko hadn't so much as hurt a fly up to that point in his life, so he decided that he would take lessons in beheading things.

"I mean to begin with a guinea pig, and work my way through the animal kingdom," Aldridge as Koko said, ad-libbing, "until I come to a Canadian tenor."

Odd, the things that stick in one's mind….
