Two Oklahoma authors will be discussing "The State of the Novel," the latest presentation by BookSmart Tulsa, beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Joseph Gierek Fine Art, 1512 E. 15th St.

Participants will be Rilla Askew and Constance Squires. Both authors will be reading from their work, and discussing their thoughts about long-form fiction in our increasingly short-attention span world.

Askew's novels include several Oklahoma Book Award-winning titles such as "The Mercy Seat" and "Harpsong," as well as "Fire in Beulah," her American Book Award-winning novel set during the Tulsa Race Riot. Last year she received the Arrell Gibson Lifetime Achievement Award from the Oklahoma Center for the Book for her work.

Squires is a three-time nominee for the Pushcart Prize for her short stories, and her non-fiction has appeared in venues as diverse as the NPR program "Snap Judgment" and The Village Voice. She is the author of the novel "Along the Watchtower," and teaches in the MFA program in Creative Writing at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond.

As with most BookSmart Tulsa programs, this event is free.
