Nathan Mitcham pumps his fist after a basketball game at Owasso High School on Tuesday, February 12, 2013. Mitcham, who is the team's mentally disabled student manager, saw playing time in the team's win over Sand Springs. MATT BARNARD/Tulsa World

A special moment at Owasso High School

The gym was nearly full three hours before Owasso tipped off against Sand Springs. In the locker room, Nathan Mitcham arranged and re-arranged his new shoes. He got two pair donated to him for his big night. "One for first half and the other for the second half, he explains."
Nathan is a senior, a special needs student and the team's basketball manager. After #dressNathanout tweets from senior guard Jaylen Lowe went viral and were re-tweeted by Kevin Durant, Toby Keith, Carrie Underwood, Johnny Manziel and others, Nathan got his chance to dress out and play with the Rams on Tuesday night.

Columnist John Hoover sums up the night perfectly in this article, so I'll just re-iterate. It was nice to see everyone in the gym, the town, and as Jaylen Lowe says, "all over the state," come together to make Nathan's dream come true. Out on the court, Owasso students rushed up and carried Nathan on their shoulders. When things started to simmer down, and Nathan walked toward the locker room, I ask him what he thought. "Good," he said.

Thank you, John, for telling us how Nathan responded to your question. That's how I felt, too, after looking at that incredible photo and reading the story this morning. Good.
