Actress Valerie Harper has been diagnosed with brain cancer.

Harper, who co-starred with Mary Tyler Moore in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and the spinoff "Rhoda," was recently diagnosed with leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, she told People magazine next issue.

An unexplained numbness in her jaw eventually led to the diagnosis on January 15.

The rare and aggressive disease occurs when cancer cells spread into the membrane surrounding the brain, she told the website. She said she is taking chemotherapy but she may have as little as three months to live, reported the magazine.

"I don't think of dying," said Harper, who had never smoked but was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2009 and later beat that disease. "I think of being here now."

The 73-year-old native of Suffern, N.Y., also told the magazine "I'm well past my expiration date already."

A Golden Globe and multiple Emmy winner, she married Tony Cacciotti in 1987 and has one child. She is also the author of her memoir "I, Rhoda."
