Admiral Twin Drive-in: What's your dream double-feature?

What double-feature would you project onto the Admiral Twin Drive-in's new screens?

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, the show is about to begin: The Admiral Twin Drive-in reopens next Friday.

The 60-year Tulsa institution that burned to the ground in September returns with new screens and a new concession stand for a new generation to enjoy movies under the stars.

These are your viewing choices next Friday: "Rock of Ages" and "Men in Black III" on one side, "The Avengers" and "Snow White and the Huntsman" on the opposite side.

But if you could serve as guest programmer for the Admiral Twin for an evening, what images would you project onto the largest movie screens in the Southwest?

What would be your dream double-feature? Tell us and we'll post a few responses in next week's Weekend section cover story celebrating the return of watching movies in the great outdoors.

We played around with this question in a story last year.

There was the obvious choice: "The Outsiders" and "Rumble Fish," both based on S.E. Hinton's Tulsa-based novels and shot here.

Francis Ford Coppola's film of "The Outsiders" shot scenes at the Admiral Twin in 1982. Ever since that time, the drive-in has remained arguably the most famous film location in Oklahoma, as much for the young actors who became superstars (Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze and more) as for Hinton's beloved book.

Drive-in co-owner Blake Smith went for pairing up "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" with "The Sting," a pure Paul Newman-Robert Redford double-feature.

Longtime Admiral Twin projectionist Bob Keith recalled how good business was at the drive-in anytime that a John Wayne picture opened, so he chose "Red River" and "Blood on the Moon."

I went for my own personal nostalgia and selected a cheesy horror film, "Humanoids from the Deep," (salmon-man creatures mating with humans!) and the still-spooky sci-fi fantasy "Altered States," both from 1980, and both of which I saw at the drive-in.

But now the question begs: What's your ideal double-feature for a night at the Admiral Twin Drive-in?

The Avengers sounds good to me. I wouldn't spend a penny to see Jaws. Love American Graffiti, a classic and The Outsiders (rather appropriate wouldn't you say)?

The most memorable double feature I ever attended at a drive-in theater was during the early 70's at Tahlequah....J.W. Coop followed by Woodstock.

Talk about a diverse audience! A bunch of the Hippies from NSC (now NSU) spent the first feature (J.W. Coop) smoking dope and getting high. As soon as the second feature (Woodstock) began all of the rednecks fired up their pickups and left in disgust.

I See Movies for Free

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
