For those interested in the Tulsa Awards for Theatre Excellence, you have the chance to see three of the nominees for the 2012 awards this weekend.

Actors Company of Tulsa opens its production of "Othello" by William Shakespeare Thursday at the Greenwood Cultural Center, 322 N. Greenwood Ave. This production, directed by Bonny Downs, sets the play in 1920s Tulsa, a short time before the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921. Performances are at 7 p.m. Feb. 16, 17 and 24, 1 p.m. Feb. 19 and 26. Tickets are $15 at the door.

The Midwestern Theatre Troupe debuts a new translation of Aristophanes' "The Frogs," at the Nightingale Theater, 1416 E. Fourth St. The translation of this ancient Greek comedy is by Amy Page, and is sure to be enlivened by the company's fondness for highly theatrical high-jinx and vaudevillian humor. Performances are 8 p.m. Feb. 16-18 and 24-26. Tickets are $12 at the door.

Playhouse Tulsa
's production of "The Tempest," another Shakespeare work, wraps up its run at the Tulsa PAC with a show at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 17. The other half of the company's "The Storm Repertory," Cody Daigle's "William and Judith," will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16 and 18. "The Tempest" is a TATE nominee; "William and Judith" is simply worth seeing. Tickest are $18-25 at the door, or at 918-596-7111, or tulsaworld.com/mytix.

Nominated shows that have already been presented are: “Angels in America” by Actors Company of Tulsa; “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” by Theatre Tulsa; “The Guys” by Theatre Pops; and “The Caucasian Chalk Circle” by Heller Theatre.

Upcoming shows that have been nominated are “Gruesome Playground Injuries” by Odeum Theatre Company, set to open March 8 at the Nightingale Theater; and "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds” by Theatre Tulsa, opening March 9 at the Tulsa PAC.
