After Hostess announces closure, will there be a run on Twinkies?

The maker of Twinkies, Ho Hos, Dings Dongs and Sno Balls is asking a bankruptcy court for permission to shut down, blaming a strike by bakers.

It has started another furor among lovers of the snacks.

I wrote a blog in January after news broke that Hostess Brands filed for bankruptcy protection.

At that time the iconic sweets started flying off the shelves. So, I predict another rush on the treats.

The competiton for a space in childrens' lunchboxes is a lot stiffer than it used to be. It can't be easy on Hostess to say in business. Just think about all of the prepackaged snacks available now compared to 30 years ago.

And don't get me started on the gluten!!!

Yet, if your grocery aisle has been picked clean and you need a nostalgic fix, here are some recipes that might do the trick.

Homemade Twinkie Cake

1 cup milk
5 tablespoons flour
1 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup Crisco
1/2 cup cold butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 baked yellow cake

Directions:
1. Mix flour with milk and boil until thick. (It will be very thick) Cool.
2. Beat until fluffy and add other ingredients one at a time beating well after each addition.
3. Put between layers of cooled cake.
4. You can let the cake stand one day to develop flavor.
5. Cut into bars and wrap individually in plastic wrap.

And yes, Union's kill another business. I understand the need for them 80 years ago, before OSHA forced companies to provide a safe workplace and decent wages, but their time has come and gone and they are now just a hindrance to both employees and employers and need to go.

There might be a walk, or a waddle, on Twinkies, but most likely not a run.

Nothing to do with unions.

Look at the history of this company and how many times it has been bought and sold in the last thirty years.

Each time it has been picked clean by the purchaser before being resold with the same line. "The unions are killing us". The carpetbaggers who tossed their money in, looking for a 50% return on their money in three to five years at any cost. These are the Captains of Industry, the job creators who lobby relentlessly through the Republican party to lower their taxes so they can create more jobs. Lower their taxes, so in this case they can keep the spoils from a bankruptcy filed a year ago. Once they dismantle the company and sell off the trademarks and factories, they will have a very pretty penny to "protect" from our evil tax laws. None of those profits will be used to "create more jobs". They will end up in off shore accounts, the accounts like Mittens hid from the American people and paid no tax on. All the while blaming unions and the workers who baked the bread.

Simple explanation from crooks and thieves.

Don't worry, your precious Ho Ho's and Twinkies will reappear from bankruptcy once the thieves sell the trademark to another company.

You must be a union worker who drinks the same old "Cool Aid" that the rest of your un-informed, tunnel visioned, brain washed populace follows to their demise.

Praying Ham..... do you also believe that Richard Roberts can heal any ails through a "faith offering"?

You must have just stumbled upon this story.

As I said, look at the history of this company.

It is not a small family owned company that has been victimized by an evil union.

Turn the hair clipper back on and finish with that poodle. You have three more to do before lunch.

PH - are you saying that Poodle Grooming is not a legitimate business? Or is it just that you don't know of a union that wants or has power over them. Poodle
Groomers probably make more money than a lot of you union folks.

You assume a lot when you assume I'm a union member.

I am just familiar with the situation at Hostess Brands and at the Tulsa plant.

Now back to those clippers you go!

Hammy, first you say "Nothing to do with unions", them you rebut with the fact you are familiar with THIS business. Because of the bakers refusing to comply with the company request they have put all of the other employees out of work, you know, the people who work there and agreed to take a temporary cut in wages and benefits since it's the holidays and it would be especially difficult to find another job in this toxic climate we now live in.
All of the other employees voted to comply with the company offer except the bakers so now everyone is out of work.
So are you an expert on all unions or only an expert on the background of the Hostess Company?

you just picked up on this story today, didn't you.

It's been going on for years.

I was in the 11th & Lewis Reasor's over the lunch hour, and the Hostess end cap was hit pretty hard. Looks like it will be Blue Bird products now.

15th and Lewis, rather.

Kind of like the run on the gun show?

Same mentality.

"You'll have to pry my cold, chubby, dead fingers off my twinkie..".
