A stimulus package is going to pass in some form. With luck, it won't be loaded up with a bunch of unnecessary projects, such as tax breaks for movie producers to buy film. But there ought to be some projects that would encourage and fund mass transit systems, especially in those areas, such as Oklahoma, that are not accustomed to mass transit, at least by rail.

Well, there is the Heartland Flyer but it doesn't do eastern Oklahoma much good. If you're going from Oklahoma City to Texas and soon on to Kansas City, it's great. But over here in the eastern part of the state, where most of the population resides, it is of little value.

That, however, is another topic for another day.

Light rail that would link cities and towns in northeastern Oklahoma is a good idea. It would obviously be good for both Tulsa and its growing suburbs. I've always been a big fan of a monorail system for Tulsa and its suburbs.

But how about the old standby idea to link Tulsa with the Oklahoma City area via the rail line that pretty follows the Turner Turnpike and historic U.S. 66? I always believed that such a line would be beneficial to both cities and points in between.

But I also think that just as important would be a rail line that links Tulsa to Norman. The riders on OU football Saturdays alone would be impressive. And think of all the northeastern Oklahoma students attending OU. The safety factor would put a lot of parents at ease as they wait for their child to make it to Norman.

Building a rail line in Oklahoma would be a long-term job creator. And it would be good for the environment. Rebuilding or beginning mass transit systems is a idea good not only for Oklahoma but nationwide.
