Alton Brown's sardine and avocado diet

Food Network fans, have you seen the Alton Brown special "Live and Let Diet." What do you think?
Brown explains how he lost so much weight, revealing it's in part from eating sardine and avocado sandwiches. Think of it as a kicked-up tuna sandwich. He says the avocado provides a nice smooth and creamy buffer to the salty sardines. Kind of like canned tuna and mayonnaise.
If you like sardines, it might sound better than prepackaged, frozen diet food. But I can't imagine many people would be able to eat them on a regular basis like Brown does. He actually says they're good for breakfast, lunch or dinner. That gives me the chills.
Here's more of what Brown proposes in "Live and Let Diet."
Eat daily:
- Fruits
- Whole grains
- Leafy greens
- Nuts
- Carrots
- Green tea
Eat three times a week:
- Oily fish
- Yogurt
- Broccoli
- Sweet potato
- Avocado
Eat once a week:
- Red meat
- Pasta
- Dessert
- Alcohol
Never!
- Fast food
- Soda
- Processed meals/frozen dinners
- Canned soup
- "Diet" anything
Eat breakfast every day, no exceptions.

I saw this show, and must admit I agree with you about the sardines. Much of the rest of it, fine and dandy. But I'd have to have exhausted every other possibility before I'd succumb to a diet of salty, boney fishies day after day.

reminds me of the original Weight Watchers diet - fish 5 times a week (boy did I go through cases of tuna...), all the green and yellow veggies you could stand, very limited amounts of beef and pork, skim milk and hard cheeses (remember, "if it's spreadable, it's inedible"...). It does make a lot of sense though, to eat oily fishes for the omega-3 but I would have to go with salmon instead of sardines. I remember my dad eating those nasty cans of fish in mustard sauce (yuck) with saltines. He was the most popular person in the house with our cats!!

It is clear Alton lost a great deal of weight. . . but at the cost of a great deal of taste.
I am surprised that Alton couldn't have been a bit more imaginative in varying food. Fish 3x per week no matter how prepared is just too much fish.
Avacado on the other hand I consider nothing less than nectar of the gods. . . but even avacado 3x per week is extreme.
Believe me you can have great tasting food on any diet. You just cannot have a LOT of great tasting food, and there is always exercise along with less food.
