The event is a cross-country relay of the 'American Idol" microphone which will travel from New York City to the Los Angeles stage where the reality singing competition is produced.

Host Ryan Seacrest will launch the two-week, 5,000-mile trek March 1 in New York City and the "mic" will arrive in time for the Top 10 live performance show at 7 p.m. March 13 on Fox, channel 23, cable 5.

The journey continues: March 2 in Boston; March 3 in Philadelphia; March 4 in Washington, D.C.; March 5 in Atlanta; March 6 in Nashville; March 7 in Detroit; March 8 in Chicago; March 9 in Oklahoma City; March 10 in Dallas/Ft. Worth; March 11 in Phoenix and March 12 in Las Vegas.

Along the way, local "Idols" – fans, inspirational heroes, local officials and former "Idols" – will walk, run, bike, row, drive, skateboard, line-dance, roller-skate, skip, scooter and fly the “mic,” among other means of travel, from state to state with their friends and family cheering them along the way, according to Fox.

One lucky relay team member will win tickets to the "Idol" season finale.

Beginning Tuesday, fans interested in joining the Relay Team can go online at tulsaworld.com/amidolmic. Also on the "AI" site, fans can follow the "mic" and the relay team in real time via an interactive map. Videos, photos and updates will be available on the website and on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Rita Sherrow grew up with TV. Yes, it was the ever-present “sister” from another techno mother. At first look, it was instant "Like." From then on, the TV had to be on in every room while she studied, elementary school through college. An Air Force brat, she attended school in three states (Oklahoma, Montana and Georgia) and two foreign countries (Germany and Bermuda) and graduated from Broken Arrow High School and the University of Tulsa with a degree in journalism/advertising. She first interned in the advertising world but, when a J-School professor (who also covered politics for the Tulsa World) offered her an internship at the newspaper, she took him up on it. The rest is history. She has served as bridal editor, senior features writer for the women’s section, food editor and is television editor of the Tulsa World. In addition to writing about TV shows and interviewing the stars for “Scene” stories, she also writes a TV column for Weekend and produces the Sunday TV World listings magazine.
