The 12th season premiere of "American Idol" Wednesday was down 19 percent in viewership, according to hollywoodreporter.com.

The Fox reality singing competition drew 17.81 million viewers, down from 21.9 million in January 2012. But it was ahead of 10.7 million who watched NBC's hit series "The Voice" premiere last fall, reported the website.

Even though it was "Idol's" lowest-rated in-season premiere, Fox still won the night in the ratings. The two-hour opener gave Fox "the highest-rated night with entertainment programming of any network so far this season and outrated ABC, CBS and NBC combined by 11 percent," according to the website.

Part two of the "AI" season premiere, with new judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban, airs Thursday 7-9 p.m. on channel 23, cable 5 in Tulsa.

American Idol is losing its luster.

They are spending too much time on good singers and not enough time on the delusional idiots.

I wasn't sure I would watch American Idol this season, I've watched it every season since 2006. But I did watch it last night, it was okay. I do like Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey and Keith Urban. I'm not sure of that other freak.

I do have to say I'm am so tired of listening to every contestant's sob story, boo hoo. The Voice, X Factor and AI put the spotlight on contestants that are single mothers, had a rough life, lives in a car, parent was on drugs, etc. Well, most all of us have difficult times during different times in our lives.

All I want to know about them is their name, age, where they are from and maybe prior occupation, that's all, nothing else. I just want to watch the contestant's sing, see their talent, how they dress and act while performing. Then I'll vote. Everything else is irrelevant.

Rita Sherrow grew up with TV. Yes, it was the ever-present “sister” from another techno mother. At first look, it was instant "Like." From then on, the TV had to be on in every room while she studied, elementary school through college. An Air Force brat, she attended school in three states (Oklahoma, Montana and Georgia) and two foreign countries (Germany and Bermuda) and graduated from Broken Arrow High School and the University of Tulsa with a degree in journalism/advertising. She first interned in the advertising world but, when a J-School professor (who also covered politics for the Tulsa World) offered her an internship at the newspaper, she took him up on it. The rest is history. She has served as bridal editor, senior features writer for the women’s section, food editor and is television editor of the Tulsa World. In addition to writing about TV shows and interviewing the stars for “Scene” stories, she also writes a TV column for Weekend and produces the Sunday TV World listings magazine.
