Elam Blank retires from the restaurant business after more than 20 years. JAMES GIBBARD/Tulsa World

We are going to miss Elam Blank, the big man with the white hair, white mustache and dressed in overalls, serving up such homespun dishes as meatloaf, pot roast, turkey and dressing, fried chicken and schnitzels.

Blank, who has operated Amish Kitchen locations around Tulsa since 1988, called to tell me he has closed his latest restaurant, located at 3147 S. Harvard Ave.

"I'm not going to reopen this time," Blank said. "I'm going to do some other things."

I also learned of another closing not quite so permanent. Josh Lynch told me he shuttered his Dog House restaurant, featuring gourmet hot dogs and late, late-night hours on weekends, at 1101 S. Detroit Ave.

"We still have our four hot dog carts and a food truck, and we're going to be using them more extensively throughout the week during lunch and on weekends and during events downtown," Lynch said.

"I think we would open a restaurant location again if we could find the right spot in one of the popular areas downtown."

Lynch said daily locations of the carts will be posted on the Dog House Facebook page.

The dog house was lacking. Tried to make specialty hot dogs with lack luster low grade food. The was more time spent on the paint job than the thought put into the source of their food
