Amuse-bouche service (almost) flawless for my charity night at Michael V's

My one-night stint Tuesday with the waitstaff at Michael V's to benefit the food bank's Food for Kids program was a resounding success, at least from my prejudiced point of view.
My job was to distribute the amuse-bouche -- a tasty little number that included pecan-herb cheese on a crostini and topped with a red grape -- to customers after they were settled at their tables and had placed their orders. Then, I was supposed to charm them into putting an extra tip in my palm, all of which would go to the charity.
My timing wasn't always as precise as the New England Patriots offense, and as the dining room rapidly filled I sometimes had trouble remembering if I had served a particular table its amuse-bouche, but I got through the evening without dropping one of the little suckers on the floor or in someone's lap. And amazingly, the kitchen staff and waitstaff managed to dodge my presence when I clumsily drifted in their paths while they were in a rush with something hot in their hands.
My wife said I seemed to do OK, although she had the enviable task of chatting up the honored guests in the bar all evening, so I'm not sure about the accuracy of her opinion.
I did meet many very interesting people, and even reconnected with one long-ago friend, and their wonderful generosity in giving to the charity always will be remembered.
I also give a big thanks to owners Carol and Michael Minden and the staff at Michael V's, who were incredible to be around for an evening. At the end of the shift, they fed us a fabulous pistachio-encrusted halibut with raspberry sauce and a tenderloin Oscar to die for. That's some pretty good wages for a night's work, if you ask me.
