Classic Who villains The Ice Warriors are confirmed to make their return in the second half of season 7, the website
SFX is reporting.
The episode is written by Mark Gatiss, who has written some of the best episodes of the show("Idiot's Lantern", "A Good Man Goes to War," among others), is a co-creator of
"Sherlock," and plays Sherlock's older brother Mycroft on that show, so it should be a pretty decent episode.
We don't have a title yet, but the episode is set inside a submarine.
"The sense of a monster of that scale and that size trapped in a really small, contained environment such as a submarine was a really brilliant story to be able to tell." Doctor Who’s executive producer Caro Skinner told SFX.
The Ice Warriors were featured in both the second and third Doctor'd tenures, but haven't been seen since 1974’s "The Monster of Peladon."
I assume that they will be redesigned like the
Cybermen and
The Silurians were, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what they come up with.
Showrunner Steven Moffat seems to be bringing more and more of the classic series into this season than ever before. The new TARDIS interior, The Doctor's new costume, the new opening titles and the resurgence of old monsters all reflect this. Whether these changes are part of a permanent design philosophy or because this year marks the 50th anniversary of the first airing of the show, and they are just getting a but nostalgic remains to be seen.
