Anyone can make a sheet cake.

Yes, anyone. To prove it, I asked my husband to make the chocolate sheet cake featured in the Scene section of today's Tulsa World.

This is a person who has never made a cake in his life. The result? It tasted great and looked good enough to be photographed for the paper.

Yes, it took him more than the average amount of time to make it. But after two hours in the kitchen, we had cake. Really good cake.

I wondered if he would know to do all of the little things that cooks instinctively know to do, even if the recipe doesn't tell you. Like leveling the flour and getting the clumps out of the baking soda.

It made me realize that our recipes aren't always specific enough, especially for beginner cooks.

But in the end, I was glad to know that the cake I had written about as being "easy" to make really was. Even for a first-time cake maker.

Great idea, Natalie! I might make my husband do that this weekend.
This gives me hope that I, too, can bake a cake. And it looks great! Please give Jason my kudos ... j.a.w.
