April Jo's/Wings burgers

When April Uzzel opened April Jo's hamburger place last September we tried to uncover a bit of the history for the building at 3409 E. Admiral Place.

Of course, we knew it had been Wings Hamburgers for the majority of its life, since Marie Wing opened it in 1976. Longtime residents of the area told us it had been a Tastee Freez and a place called Gerald's prior to that.

Subsequently I received an e-mail from World reader Mike Isley, who also remembers the little building had been a Dairy Land in the mid-1960s.

Can anyone add to that?

A date etched into a back concrete walkway reads 4-6-49, so it is probable businesses have been in that space for 70 years.

I was reading the blogs about my family's restaurant,Cortners, that just recently closed and I noticed the article about April Jo's. The Dairyland that was mentioned was the first of four restaurants that my Mom and Dad, Pat and Cecil Cortner owned. Dairyland was in operation when my Dad bought it sometime around 1962. I was 12 when I had my first job taking orders at the walk-up windows. He also had Tulsa Maiden,12th and Peoria,Family Tree,31st and Mingo, and also Cortner's,6th and Sheridan.
