Lots of little pieces of art -- the TAC Gallery's annual 5 x 5 show.
The fifth of May has come to mean, for most people, the chance to dive metaphorically into a sea of margaritas, with the occasional ancillary side trips into salsa – the dance style and the condiment.
However, for Tulsa art lovers, May 5 is the day of the Tulsa Artists’ Coalition’s annual “5 x 5 Show and Sale.”
Artists from Tulsa and the surrounding region have created more than 250 individual works, each measuring no larger than 5 inches in any dimension, that will go on display and on the market precisely at 5:55 p.m. Saturday at the TAC Gallery, 9 E. Brady St.
Each work costs $55, and there is a requested donation of $5 at the door on opening night. All proceeds from the donations and the sales of art during the “5 x 5 Show and Sale” go to operating the gallery and supporting the local artists who exhibit there.
The gallery will be open 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday through May 18, and will be open from noon to 9 p.m. May 19. The gallery will be close for maintenance May 20-June 1.

Also opening this week is a new gallery space in the Pearl District, Manic Pixie Studios, 1388 E. Sixth St. The new space, operated by artists Rosemary Daugherty and Heather Dixon, will host an “Open Garage” from 3:45 to 8 p.m. Monday.
The studio plans to focus on education as much as exhibition, with “Manic Monday” art classes for children and adults. This Monday’s opening event will begin with classes for youngsters from 3:45 to 5:15 p.m., followed by a “happy hour” for adults from 6 to 8 p.m., with music provided by DJ Steve Cluck.
Dixon said Manic Pixie will be “a genuine working studio,” yet “it’s our opinion that professional artists should never take themselves too seriously.”
For her and Daugherty, “it was only natural to engage the community by offering fresh and fun opportunities for people of all ages and artistic abilities to socialize and explore their creative side.”

Santa Fe artist Michael Kessler, whose work has won international awards and has been exhibited around the world, has an exhibit of new paintings now on display through June 2 at Joseph Gierek Fine Art, 1512 E. 15th St.
Kessler’s work has been described as “nature-based abstractions,” highly painterly works that evoke the warmth of the natural world while still remaining determinedly non-representational.
Kessler once described his approach to his work as “building a surface…not so much an image. I see my work as a metaphor for nature – about wondering how it (nature) got that way, realizing that we may never find out. I'm interested in beauty, but not a superficial or superfluous beauty – something deeper."
