It's a chicken recipe so good it's brought marriage proposals.
In Wednesday's Scene section, I wrote about Engagement Chicken, a recipe originating with an editor of Glamour magazine. It's become legendary, with young women making it in hopes of a diamond ring and a walk down the aisle. The whole idea may sound terribly retro, but these women say it works.
After our story was published, I heard from Christine Good, a Broken Arrow woman who can vouch for the magic of Engagement Chicken.
Here's her story:
After dating her boyfriend for about two years, Christine decided it was time to kick their relationship into high gear. It was then that she found the recipe for Engagement Chicken in Glamour magazine.
"I'm not known for my cooking abilities, but this recipe seemed foolproof! I followed the recipe perfectly washing the chicken, lovingly patting it dry, seasoning it inside and out. I just KNEW that it was going to impress him so much that he'd propose right there on the spot.
"Two hours after eating my Engagement Chicken he was stricken with...ahem...severe and violent intestional distress. Within two weeks, he broke up with me and I moved out of town, thinking our relationship was over for good," Christine said.
But, wait! There's more to this culinary fairy tale.
The power of Engagement Chicken would not be denied.
"Within three months we were back together, married and expecting a baby," she said. "That was almost seven years and two feisty little boys ago."
Her husband, Scott Good, now loves telling people how she almost killed him with her Engagement Chicken. Of course, he rebounded, and with a marriage proposal.
She hasn't made the chicken since.
