For an escapade into nature and surrounded by good food and great music, Backwoods Bash is your low-cash Memorial Day weekend getaway. It is May 22-24 at Thundermoon Ranch in Mannford.

“The main thing here is that it’s a good, family-friendly, affordable weekend getaway,” said Matt Jostes, the event’s creative director. “This is only our second year, and we’ve grown from two to three days.”

The event also raises funds for the nonprofit Make A Difference Foundation children’s charity and is presented by the Oklahoma National Guard, said Jostes.

This year’s roster includes 25 bands from five surrounding states, “everything from reggae to rock to punk,” said Jostes.

And organizers have added children’s areas, a veterans memorial service and gospel music on Sunday, he said.

“When I first got involved, I found it surprising that there weren’t more camping and music festivals around here,” said Jostes.

Thundermoon Ranch and Paintball is at 33440 W. 51st St. South, Mannford, about 20 miles west of Tulsa.

Barrelhouse Beat

Barrelhouse: A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.

Beat: The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.

About me: I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
