Bag of basil

What would you do with a bag of basil?

A green-thumbed friend gave me a gift better than roses - a big bag of basil.

She was cutting back her enormous basil plant from her herb garden, and knew I was in need.

My own basil didn't suffer -- it had a quick death in July after caretaker neglect. So all summer I've depended on the kindness of friends and the offerings of strangers to give me enough basil for pesto, salads and pasta.

Last week I broke down and bought some from the grocery store, and I couldn't believe the price: $4 for a teeny, tiny package.

The bag my friend gave me would cost at least $20 at the grocery store. So I'm putting it to good use. Tonight it's going into a spinach tortellini with tomatoes and balsamic vinegar.

Tomorrow, who knows? What would you do with a big bag of basil?

The dog walked his happy behind all over my basil last weekend and ruined it all. I hate buying basil at the grocery.

Basil jelly. I've always wanted to try it. I imagine it's in the same vein as pepper jelly. If I get ambitious I'll make the jelly, I've got three huge basil plants, otherwise it's pesto for the freezer.

What a good friend! :) Actually, I gave you that because I found the copy of "A Short Guide to a Happy Life" by Anna Quindlin. You, my friend, are also a good friend.
P.S. I'm making basil chicken this weekend. Wish me luck.
