My own basil didn't suffer -- it had a quick death in July after caretaker neglect. So all summer I've depended on the kindness of friends and the offerings of strangers to give me enough basil for pesto, salads and pasta.
Last week I broke down and bought some from the grocery store, and I couldn't believe the price: $4 for a teeny, tiny package.
The bag my friend gave me would cost at least $20 at the grocery store. So I'm putting it to good use. Tonight it's going into a spinach tortellini with tomatoes and balsamic vinegar.
