Ballet by Ma Cong to be performed at London's Royal Opera House

When the Richmond (Va.) Ballet travels this summer to England, the company will be taking a piece of Tulsa Ballet’s Ma Cong with it.

According to an article in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the company will perform June 15-16 in the Linbury Studio Theatre, described as “an underground theater within London’s Royal Opera House at Covent Garden.”

The program the company will perform will include “Eshter Vals,” a ballet Cong created for the company during the 2010-2011 season. Also on the program is “Swipe” by Val Caniparoli, who served as Tulsa Ballet’s resident choreography for several years.

The ballets by Cong and Caniparoli will be part of a program titled “Made in America: Traditions and Innovations” that includes works by George Balanchine and John Butler.

"The idea for the program is to showcase ballets created in America, and we decided to show two sides of that -- the traditional along with the brand-new," said Caitlyn Powitz, public relations coordinator for the Richmond Ballet.

"The ballets by Val Caniparoli and Ma Cong were the most recent of the 55 works the company has commissioned," she said. "And both were very well received by our audiences as well as by critics."

Cong said "Ershter Vals" was inspired in part by Hollywood films about World War II, and by music originating in the Jewish ghettos of the time.

"It celebrates the moments of brightness that can still shine in the midst of dark times," he said.

Dance Magazine wrote of Cong's ballet that "'Ershter Vals'...is a touching, full-bodied, inventive piece... The dancers swooped through their waltzes beautifully, with much tenderness between partners..." - Wendy Perron, Dance Magazine USA.

Cong is also preparing another new ballet for the Richmond company, which will be premiered in March.

Richmond Ballet is a 16-member company led by artistic director Stoner Winslett. Three of company’s members also have ties to Tulsa. Dancer Valerie Tellman is a Tulsa native, dancer Cecile Tuzii danced with Tulsa Ballet, and the company’s ballet mistress, Jerri Kumery began her dance studies with Moscelyne Larkin and Roman Jasinski, founders of Tulsa Ballet.
