Banal retentive

This individual kneels nigh to a rut, not unlike the one in which I often feel stuck.

"Rather a slut than in a rut." -- Anonymous

Although I wouldn't be a proponent of this overheard philosophy, if taken literally, I do loathe me some ruttiness.

Like how I've been listening to "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" every day in my car since last week. It's one of my favorite albums, but dang. And the oatmeal-blueberry thing? It's a-gratin' on my nerves, me hearties.

Some ruts are good, though. Having gone to Gymboree about six days out of the week for a little while, I think I may have gotten burnt out. However, after nearly a week of not exercising, I was WAAAAAAAAY tired of being a slug. I know I've rambled about this before, but it still amazes me how much sweeter my mood is when I get out of bed and make myself exercise. So Thursday, despite having felt icky lately, I went to Gymboree to sweat off 4.5 miles of angsty grist on the treadmill while Brad seranaded me with assorted runnable iTunes.

This morning, I rose -- an overly flowery term considering I only got three hours of sleep -- to go to a 7:30 a.m. yoga class. It wasn't Kiminatrix, whose classes I sorely missed this week; but the gentleman who led it today was great. Several times during the class, though, I kept pondering how banal life seems to me lately. I know I'm supposed to be concentrating on breathing and stuff, as "the mat is your world," Mr. Yoga told us. But my world was frequently orbited by thoughts of my own banality, as well as the occasional "I wonder if the bre'fast stuff at Starbucks is any good" (and it is, by the way, particularly the egg white, spinach and feta wrap).

Obvi, I need to spice things up. And probably stop abbrev'ing words that shouldn't be. Whatever, 'tis time for change! Today, someone special discussed something with me that might turn out to be an AWESOME health-related opportunity for yours truly (that'd be me, I hope). And there's some big news on my personal horizon, creepy as those two words seem when typed together, but I feel like I need to wait a few weeks before spilling those beans.

Speaking of, here's how the vittle intake's gone down lately:

THURSDAY: Oatmeal with cinnamon and Splenda (ugh) for breakfast; the gyro platter at Zorba's Greek place downtown with Nellie (yum); 1/4 of a single-serving bag of Cheez-Its (BAD!) for a snack; and a big bowl of black beans at Lord V's, as well as a big piece of cornbread (I'll flagellate myself for that via exercise at some point this weekend).

FRIDAY: That egg white-wrap thing at Starbucks for breakfast; a salmon wrap with carrots and hummus at Elote for lunch; and probably some grilled chicken lurking in my fridge for dinner.

OK, I have a story to finish so I can start my weekend of non-ruttiness. Maybe I'll finish one of the three books I've started on my nightstand. Or finally put away the clothes I washed Sunday afternoon. Hmm, decisions, decisions ...

Peace, love and hummus ... XOXO

Forget that Starbuck's thing. Try this: 1pkg frozen spinach, 1/2 can chopped water chestnuts, 1 can cream of celery soup, 2 tbs parmesan cheese, 4 tbs carrots, 1/4 cup low-fat yogurt. Mix up everything but the spinach, then add the spinach and mix it again.

Put it in 4 small baking dishes. In the morning, add an egg or two on top, cover it with foil, and throw it in a 350 oven until the eggs are cooked (about 45 min). Much better, cheaper, and about 120 fewer calories. That's about a third of a pound a week.

I should add that makes 4 servings.

Living Wright

While other kids were watching "The Smurfs," Scene Writer Jason Ashley Wright was tuned in to "Style with Elsa Klensch." By fourth grade, he knew he wanted to write, and spent almost three years publishing a weekly teen-oriented magazine, Teen-Zine -- circulation: 2. After earning a degree in journalism from the University of Southern Mississippi, he became the medical reporter and teen board coordinator for the Hattiesburg (Miss.) American, a Gannett newspaper. Eight months later, with visions of Elsa dancing in his head, he applied for the fashion writer position at the Tulsa World, where he began working on Aug. 3, 1998. He is now a general assignment reporter for Scene.
