After seeing the excellent documentary "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" -- look for my three-and-a-half-star review in Friday's Scene section -- I suggest not missing these guys while they're in Tulsa for a couple of days.
Funny and flawed and as blunt as they come, these 50ish Canadian rockers are a blast and have wonderful stories to tell.
First chance to witness the steely power of Anvil: Thursday at Rocklahoma, when the heavy metal band that never made it big -- and which bears a striking resemblance to "This is Spinal Tap" career moves -- will take the Pryor metalfest stage at 4:50 p.m. Their movie plays at the festival, too, late that night after an 11 p.m. performance by Anthrax.
Opportunity No. 2 to spend time with lead guitarist/vocalist Steve "Lips" Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner comes on Friday, when the band appears for a question-and-answer session about 8:30 p.m. at Circle Cinema, where the documentary opens with 7 and 9 p.m. screenings.
That's two chances to see these guys on stage before they make it to the Academy Awards as nominees in the category of best documentary. Yes, it's a longshot, but the doc is that good. Yes, it rocks.
