They have practiced and they have prepped. They have tweaked their sauces and their seasonings.

For once and for all, we find out Thursday night who cooks the better barbecue - firefighters or cops.

The Crime Commission is celebrating its 40th year with Badges-N-Barbeques: Battle of the Grills at Christiansen Aviation, Jones Airport.

The event begins at 6 p.m. with a live and silent auction, music by Mid Life Crises and a barbecue cook-off competition between local law enforcement agencies and fire departments, sponsored by Rib Crib.

I will be one of the judges for this event, which promises lots of good-natured competition. I am looking forward to seeing what our local law officers and firefighters can bring to the table.

The Crime Commission will also be honoring retired Tulsa Police Department Sgt. Mike Huff for more than 30 years as a homicide detective.

The event will raise funds for the Crime Commission, which operates successful programs such as Alert Neighbor, Citizen Alert Patrol and Safe Escape.

And, since its inception in 1979, the Crime Stopper/Arrest Arson program alone has awarded $500,000 for information that resulted in solving more than 5,000 felony cases. The programs have also recovered more than $12 million in stolen property and narcotics.

Tickets to Badges-N-Barbeques are still available for $50. For tickets and information call 918-585-5209.
