Bazinga! Scientists have named a bee after Dr. Sheldon Cooper's famous catchphrase.
Cooper, played by Jim Parsons on the number 1 TV show CBS' "The Big Bang Theory," has two doctorates and IQ of 187 and now has been the source of a name for a new species of Brazilian orchid bee – the Eugloss bazinga, according to press information. "Bazinga!" is Dr. Cooper's personal word to use after a "gotcha" moment.
The species was discovered by Brazilian biologist Andre Nemesio from the Universidade Federal de Uberlandia who works in evolutionary biology as opposed to the fictional character’s chosen filed of theoretical physics.
"We are always extremely flattered when the science community embraces our show," said Steven Molaro, one of the situation comedy’s producers. "Sheldon would be honored to know that Euglossa bazinga was inspired by him. In fact, after 'Mothra' and griffins, bees are his third-favorite flying creatures."
