Benedict Cumberbatch coming to Oklahoma for "August: Osage County"

Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the title character in the BBC's "Sherlock" series and will play a villain in the "Star Trek” sequel" next May, is reportedly the latest actor cast in "August: Osage County," which begins filming in northeastern Oklahoma next month.

The Hollywood Reporter said Friday that Cumberbatch has signed on to join the cast that already includes Oscar-winners Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts and producer George Clooney for the film based on Tulsa native Tracy Letts' award-winning play.

The 36-year-old Englishman will have to adopt a different type of accent to play "Little" Charles Aiken, one of the many members of the dysfunctional Weston family who gather at the ancestral Pawhuska-area home when a family member vanishes.

The Hollywood trade magazine reported that Cumberbatch is playing the character, who is constantly disparaged by his mother (Margo Martindale of "Justified" has been cast in the role of Streep's sister) as is his father (to be played by Oscar-winner Chris Cooper).

Abigail Breslin, Juliette Lewis and Dermot Mulroney are also cast in the film, which is planning to shoot in the Bartlesville and Pawhuska areas.

Cumberbatch has become one of Hollywood's hottest actors since his debut as the modern Sherlock Holmes, with "Sherlock" airing on PBS.

In 2011, he gained notice for his roles in both "War Horse" as well as "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy."

In December's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," Cumberbatch gives voice to the Necromancer, and next May he is scheduled to play a villain's role in the "Star Trek" sequel.

Why can't they hire Americans to play these parts?

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
