"Zero Dark Thirty," the upcoming military drama depicting the hunt for Osama bin Laden, was named best picture of the year on Wednesday by the National Board of Review.

The picture (opening in Tulsa in January) from the Oscar-winning director and writer of "The Hurt Locker," Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal, has become a major player in the awards-season race after also winning this week's top prize from the New York Film Critics Circle.

"'Zero Dark Thirty' is a masterful film," said Annie Schulhof, NBR president, as the group announced awards on its website. "Kathryn Bigelow takes the viewer inside a definitive moment of our time in a visceral and unique way. It is exciting, provocative and deeply emotional."

Bigelow also repeated as best director of 2012, but the NBR went with surprise choices in the acting categories, selecting Bradley Cooper of "The Silver Linings Playbook" as best actor and Jessica Chastain of "Zero Dark Thirty" as best actress.
