'Bible' miniseries and 'Vikings' series debuts bring huge ratings to History Channel

A miniseries about the Bible and a scripted drama centering on the violent world of medieval Norsemen lifted the History Channel to new ratings heights Sunday.

"The Bible," a 10-hour miniseries executive produced by actress Roman Downey and husband reality TV producer Mark Burnett, drew a record 13.1 million viewers for the channel in its debut. While reviews of the show were mixed, the film averaged 4.6 million adults ages 25-54, according to deadline.com.

"The Bible," retelling stories from Genesis to the Book of Revelation, continues with two-hour episodes at 7 p.m. Sundays through through March 31 on cable 55.

Riding its ratings coattails was "The Vikings," the first original scripted drama series for the cable channel. It drew an estimated 6.2 million viewers and was the no. 1 new cable series launch of the year among total viewers and adults 25-54, reported the website. The series debut beat the broadcast networks at 9 p.m. Sunday in the 18-49 demographic, reported deadline.com.

"The Vikings," a historical drama series which follows the adventures of the legendary Norse hero Ragnar Lothbrok, airs at 9 p.m. Sundays on cable 55.
