It's nerds 5.2, cool kids 4.4 in the TV ratings race.

"The Big Bang Theory" on CBS bested "American idol" in the 7 p.m. (half-hour) time slot Thursday night in the ratings and tied "American Idol" in the 18-49 demographics.

CBS' "Big Bang" was the night's highest rated program, according to Nielsen's fast national ratings, with 16.4 million viewers compared to 15.4 million for Fox's "Idol." Both shows averaged 3.2 among 18-49 viewers with "Bang" earning a 5.2 rating and a 15 share and "Idol" with a 4.4 rating (for the full hour) and a 13 share.

"Idol" was down 14 percent from a week ago and down 39 percent from a year ago. "Big Bang" was up a 10th of a point from last week, according to TVbytheNumbers.com.

On Thursday, the CBS sitcom episode centered on obsessive-compulsive scientist Sheldon(Emmy winner Jim Parsons) who found his life no longer made sense when he learned his longtime barber was in the hospital and couldn't cut his hair.

On "Idol," the top 24 contestants were revealed and a 25th contestant was reinstated. And, rocker judge Steven Tyler stripped down in front of fellow judges Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson, mooned the camera, and dove into the pool surrounding the hotel stage in Las Vegas.

Rita Sherrow grew up with TV. Yes, it was the ever-present “sister” from another techno mother. At first look, it was instant "Like." From then on, the TV had to be on in every room while she studied, elementary school through college. An Air Force brat, she attended school in three states (Oklahoma, Montana and Georgia) and two foreign countries (Germany and Bermuda) and graduated from Broken Arrow High School and the University of Tulsa with a degree in journalism/advertising. She first interned in the advertising world but, when a J-School professor (who also covered politics for the Tulsa World) offered her an internship at the newspaper, she took him up on it. The rest is history. She has served as bridal editor, senior features writer for the women’s section, food editor and is television editor of the Tulsa World. In addition to writing about TV shows and interviewing the stars for “Scene” stories, she also writes a TV column for Weekend and produces the Sunday TV World listings magazine.
