At his show Sunday at the PAC, Bill Cosby told one joke.

For much of the nearly two and a half hours he was on stage, he spun out his trademark stories about family and children and spouses and the way the people we love can drive us crazy.

But he did tell one joke – which he stressed that he did not write, only heard it from a friend. In the World’s review of the show we mentioned the joke, saying that it was about “the only question God could not answer.”

It went something like this:

Four people arrive at the Pearly Gates to heaven, and the person there informs them that, for various bureaucratic reasons, they all cannot go into heaven just yet. However, they were given pencils and papers and told to write down a question that God could not answer.

Two of the people in line – a woman and a man – each were geniuses in their fields of endeavor. The other two were a married couple, who had been together for 63 years.

All submitted their questions, which were duly taken in, and returned. The woman genius not only received the right answer to her question, but God had also given her a problem for her to work out on her own. The man genius also had his question answered correctly and completely.

The married couple, however, were ushered directly into heaven. The other two people were perplexed. “Was this some kind of Affirmative Action for old people?” they asked.

No, it was just that the married couple had asked a question even God couldn’t answer: “When will our kids get their act together?”
