I know, everything is relative. So, I’m trying to understand the plight of the poor souls on the Carnival cruise ship who had to endure a day or so of inconvenience. Or was it terror? Depends on who's being interviewed.

But, honestly, I got sick pretty quick of all the news reporting on every morning show.

My mornings consist of reading the Tulsa World while drinking glass of OJ. I check the local morning shows for the weather then usually switch over to CNN. I rarely watch any of the Today Show or whatever the other networks have on at that time of day.

I did, however, catch the beginning of the Today Show Friday morning and either the lead story or the second story was the Carnival cruise story. It might have been relegated to second by President Obama’s trip abroad.

They were breathlessly interviewing the once-stranded tourists and asking them about the trauma they endured. It was the same on CNN and probably every other news show.

Come on. I’m supposed to feel sorry for a bunch of tourists on an ocean cruise on a ship the size of many small Oklahoma towns because they had to eat some Spam (flown in by the U.S. military) and had to drink free warm beer and free Scotch without ice (neat)?

I grew up eating Spam. It’s not so bad, especially if you have nothing else. The Brits drink their beer at room temperature all the time. And I happen to like Scotch, neat.

But here’s what really gets me. While these people were whining about most all the toilets not working and the smell of rancid meat, there were people slopping around in the muck in Haiti waiting for the next act of God to fall upon them, drinking water soiled with human and animal feces and dying of cholera.

I could go on and on about much worse conditions in many other places around the world.

I’m sorry the folks on the cruise had to miss a few meals of lobster tails and I hope the chocolate mint didn’t melt on their pillows. And I really am sorry that their vacations were ruined. Really, I am. But they got their money back and the promise of a free cruise whenever they want it. Now, quit whining.
