Bring on the fish 'n' chips; Charlie Mitchell returning to Tulsa

This building held the Charlie Mitchell's Restaurant and Pub on 21st Street. It closed in 1995.

I just put a story on the Tulsa World website that Charlie Mitchell is returning to Tulsa to open Charlie Mitchell's Modern Pub at 4848 S. Yale Ave.

Mitchell is partnering with Greg McGill and Hal Walker, owners of the McGill restaurants. McGill was a former manager and partner at the Charlie Mitchell's Restaurant & Pub on 21st Street. That was the last of the five Charlie Mitchell restaurants that bore his name to close -- in August 1995.

Cheese toast and fish 'n' chips were among the most popular items at the old Charlie Mitchell's. World staffer Rhett Morgan told me his favorite dish was the lettuce wedge with honey mustard dressing.

Do you have a favorite dish or memory of the Charlie Mitchell's restaurants? I have to say I miss the Sunday buffet on 21st Street.

C.M's was a favorite spot after concerts. Loved the cheese toast and burgers.

Charlie Mitchell's was fine at the time, because we were desperate for restuarants. Tulsa has plenty of resturants now. I don't see it lasting long.

The Seafood Salad was good. My wife and I still make the hamburger patty with BBQ sauce topped with tomato , grated cheddar
cheese and green onion. They had the same thing with a chicken breast.

Absolutely! I have great memories of times there and so many visits from Charlie himself to our table to see how everything was. I've missed seeing him and hoped someday he might change his mind and open a restaurant again. I can't believe it's actually going to happen! It was where I first tried jalapenos with cream cheese inside and deep fried. Sinfully delicious. Loved their fish and chips too and was so sad when it closed. I'll be lining up this Fall!!

I appreciate what Hollycow has written. Although the food at Charlie Mitchell's was nothing special by today's standards, I always enjoyed being there. I would like to think the McGill-and-Walker combination will be able to take the old Charlie Mitchell's to a new level.

Actually, considering the improvements in area restaurants over the years, the new restaurant will need to be two levels better, in order to survive, and three levels better in order to thrive. But I think it could happen.
