Donald Trump is out. My condolences to all joke writers and newspaper editorial cartoonists.

On the other hand, the country is better off. Not that Trump really had any chance to become president.

The mystery to me was how he gained any traction at all with potential voters.

A big-shot New York wheeler-dealer who once owned gambling casinos in Atlantic City, who had been married at least three times, who looked ill at ease in anything other than a $1,000 suit (and that might be low, but I don’t know much about expensive suits), who swooped into speeches on a helicopter with his name on it and drove away in a limo with a gaggle of sycophants.

It always seemed to me that Trump really didn’t want to actually touch those people he was talking to. That might work fine in a New York City high-rise boardroom, but not on the campaign trail in Iowa or New Hampshire.

Did it not bother anyone else that he made money on a TV program where he tells people they were fired. I have never seen the show but I suppose they were mostly a bunch of greedy high rollers. But in these dire economic times who could elect a president who enjoyed firing people? Even those people.

Trump got to take credit for forcing President Obama to show his birth certificate. But even Trump realized that that voting bloc is too small to carry him to the White House. But he made them happy and probably lured some of them to his TV show, which helped ratings.

Trump is out. Good. Although I will miss the jokes.
