Did you guess Anheuser-Busch, maker of monster-selling Bud Light and Budweiser? If so, you are wrong.
How about MillerCoors, maker of Coors Light? Wrong again.
This is kind of a trick question. An Army buddy of mine in Chicago sent me a report from MSN-Money, and according to the report, the correct answer is D.G. Yuengling and Son, based in Pottsville, Pa., and the oldest still-operating brewery in the country.
I would have guessed Boston Beer, maker of Sam Adams, given its national distribution, but according to the report, Yuengling saw shipments rise 16.9 percent last year to 2.5 million barrels, compared to 2.4 million for Boston Beer.
Yuengling does not distribute to Oklahoma, although Tulsa liquor store employees will tell you it frequently is requested.
As to the first two breweries mentioned: Anheuser-Busch is a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev, based in Belgium, and MillerCoors is a joint venture of London's SABMiller and Molson Coors, which operates out of Montreal and Denver.
The No. 1-selling beer in America still is Bud Light. Coors Light surpassed Budweiser last year for the No. 2 spot, the first time in decades that Anheuser-Busch has not controlled the top two beers in the country, according to the report.
