Candy's dandy, but liquor's quicker -- and, perhaps, wearing a sweater

Ho-ho-ho responsibly.

I want to learn how to knit.

It's been a pseudo-desire of mine for years, at least since Loops at Utica Square opened. Since then, around October, I think something along the lines of, "Hmm ... It sure would be nice if I could make Christmas gifts vs. spending money I don't have on stuff for people."

Alas, December rolls around, followed by January's credit card bills and February's anxiety, which leads into spring-time tax panic, then a birthday, then all that summer heat ... Lord, the LAST thing on my melodramatic mind is knitting.

But here I am again, mid-December, pining for the skills to knit -- not just scarves and ridiculous-looking caps, though. I want to make bourbon cozies!

In a nutshell (because I don't really remember HOW this came to be), I'm an ambassador for Maker's Mark Bourbon. I honestly have no clue what that means, but a dear friend of mine, who is a BIG Maker's Mark fan, signed me up for it. Apparently, it involves my name being put on a barrel of Maker's Mark somewhere in Kentucky.

And this time of year, it involves cool Christmas swag, like the two Christmas sweaters I received in the mail so far this week. They're like miniature versions of so-ugly-they're-cute Christmas sweaters to put over your Maker's Mark bottles. I don't have any Maker's Mark, though, so I put mine on a wire mannequin form at work.

I was sent one each at the office and home, so I have a matching set, which appeases my Gemini-rooted desire for symmetry. Anyway, they're green with two reindeer prancing over the word "MAKER's" on the front. I totally want a life-sized version.

Something tells me I'll probably have to make my own, so please remind me to learn to knit after New Year's, will ya?

In the mean time, here's a recipe for a Manhattan using Maker's Mark.

Maker's Mark Manhattan

1 1/2 parts Maker's Mark
1/2 part sweet vermouth
1 teaspoon maraschino cherry juice
1 maraschino cherry
1. Shake all together for 30 seconds. Strain into chilled Manhattan glass. Garnish with a maraschino cherry (served up, no ice).

Peace, love and prancing reindeer sweaters ... XOXO

You should ask Santa for knitting lessons at Loops

So, are your fingers agile, quick and ready for a project? In your comments, you seem to have talked yourself out of learning how to knit. How about trying a small-size sweater and donating it to a friend for his/her dog? This should keep you out of trouble for at least a month or two. Happy Knitting! ;=0

Living Wright

While other kids were watching "The Smurfs," Scene Writer Jason Ashley Wright was tuned in to "Style with Elsa Klensch." By fourth grade, he knew he wanted to write, and spent almost three years publishing a weekly teen-oriented magazine, Teen-Zine -- circulation: 2. After earning a degree in journalism from the University of Southern Mississippi, he became the medical reporter and teen board coordinator for the Hattiesburg (Miss.) American, a Gannett newspaper. Eight months later, with visions of Elsa dancing in his head, he applied for the fashion writer position at the Tulsa World, where he began working on Aug. 3, 1998. He is now a general assignment reporter for Scene.
