The closest I’ve come to a homemade caramel apple this fall is a Happy Apple. You know Happy Apples? They’re the pre-made caramel apples you find at the grocery store. They’re not very good, but when you’re too lazy to buy even the one-step caramel wraps, they will do.

This weekend, I’m making caramel apples with a friend. We’re making our caramel – not just unwrapping the caramel squares and warming them in the microwave. We’re making caramel with cream, sugar and butter.

Caramel apples made with real caramel are so good they don’t need any chopped nuts or sprinkles, but we’ll probably make a few plain and a few for fun. Orange sprinkles and a chocolate drizzle would be perfect for Halloween. Or how about crushed orange and black M&Ms?

It would be a shame to have a fall without caramel apples.
