Nuhad and Sam Farhood show off a billboard advertising po' boy sandwiches at their first restaurant, Antone's.

Nuhad and Sam Farhood will end 43 years of serving customers their signature po’ boy sandwiches and Middle Eastern fare when they close Cedars Deli on Friday.

The restaurant, 2606 S. Sheridan Road, will be open 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will be serving mostly sandwiches, Sam Farhood said.

Sam Farhood said Nuhad had heart surgery about six months ago, and they both were in an auto accident about three months ago.

“My back still hurts, and we are both up in our 70s now, so it has been hard to keep going,” Sam Farhood said. “Now we just want to relax and work in our garden.”

The Farhoods, natives of Lebanon, opened their first restaurant in 1968 to go with a small Middle Eastern grocery market. Then the restaurant was called Antone’s, a franchise selling po’ boy sandwiches.

In 1976, the Farhoods dropped the franchise and launched Cedars Deli & Catering, featuring traditional Lebanese fare.

“When we first started we sold the po’ boys for 50 cents,” Sam Farhood said. “That was a long time ago.”

Maybe they will finally tell me what was in the rice that made it taste so marvelous....????

I've been going there since high school. Pity there's no one to carry it on.

I remember my Grandmother buying salami from them when I was a kid. I would get so excited when I saw the package of salami all nicely wrapped in white butcher paper when I got to her house. Best of luck!!!!!

I'm pretty sure you were the first people I ever met from the Middle East. My dad liked your sandwiches and if my memory is correct, you served a stuffed baked potato that would have been during the Antone's days. My dad was good about taking us to out of the way places, much to my mom's chagrin. He had a store in Northland Center but we were not allowed to go up there very often. But we did stop by places in North Tulsa to get bbq usually from the back door of a bar. It was funny because dad was a deacon at Broadway Baptist in Sand Springs and would pick up bbq at the same place to take to the Brotherhood Dinner. So it will be sad to see the Farhoods leave but in today's business climate I don't blame them.

The rice? Probably basmati - and toss in a bay leaf, a couple of cloves, a small stick of cinnamon. Basmati has to be soaked in water for half an hour and then washed before cooking.
