Not that it’s any of my business, but when’s the last time you had a mammogram? Or did a self exam?
A reader e-mailed me this morning regarding Breast Cancer Awareness Month and how important it is to be aware. So just in case some of you might be quite busy and use that as an excuse not to take care of yourself, I thought I’d pass along her words of caution.
“Women need to know,” said Ms. Reader, who’d prefer to be referred to as Tulsa Angel – “like a guardian angel for Tulsa women.” She’s a breast cancer survivor who encourages women to do self breast exams.
“ I had a routine mammogram, but what I had was found in a biopsy from a breast reduction and did not show up in the mammogram,” she wrote, adding that she’ll go in very soon for her mastectomy breast reconstruction.
In case you’ve never done a self-exam, Komen for the Cure’s Web site has step-by-step instructions in English, Spanish and Hindi. Check it out at www.tulsaworld.com/komenexam.
Note to guys: You should check yourself, too. The Testicular Cancer Resource Center’s online site has a great guide – see it at www.tulsaworld.com/TCRCexam.
Peace, love and awareness … xoxo
